BIG EXCLUSIVE | Govt Explores Relief in Tiger Global like Tax Cases; CBDT, Finance Ministry Examine Options The government is exploring possible relief in cases similar to Tiger Global, with the CBDT and the Finance Ministry examining available options. An amendment to the law may be required to change the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling. Any relief could send a positive signal to foreign investors investing in India through Mauritius and other tax-treaty jurisdictions. In January 2026, the Supreme Court ruled against Tiger Global in a tax dispute involving capital gains from the sale of its stake in Flipkart. The Supreme Court rejected Tiger Global’s claim to tax treaty benefits on capital gains arising from the Mauritius investment route. The ruling clarified that a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) alone does not guarantee entitlement to tax treaty benefits. Transactions undertaken primarily to avoid taxes may also face scrutiny under the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR). The proposed relief could benefit foreign investors routing investments through Mauritius and other jurisdictions with tax treaties with India. The Finance Ministry and the CBDT have not responded to Zee Business’s email seeking clarification on the matter, sent last week.

Sugar Prices Surge Over 10% Ahead of Diwali Sugar prices have risen more than 10% in the past six days as festive demand builds. Ex-mill rates jumped 13% in Uttar Pradesh to ₹5,200 per quintal and 17% in Maharashtra to ₹5,100. Tight supplies persist despite extra domestic releases, and early crushing plans face a shortage of harvest-ready cane in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The government is worried about further rises by Diwali as large-scale crushing is unlikely before November.
